Rules:

What happens here is: preferably I will put two songs head to head that are played directly after each other. In theory this is unrelated to the song of the day, but that does not mean that cannot get threshed out here.

Rentals vs. Firewater

Let's see how this first round goes.

Rentals - Please Let That Be You
vs.
Firewater - Get Out of My Head

In one corner we have the perhaps misguided optimism of The Rentals and in the opposite we have the self-deprecation of Firewater.

Get Out of My Head is from Psychopharmacology, an album of paranoia and disappointment.  I'm blanking right now on what the Return of The Rentals sounds like as a full album.  It has been a few years since I've listen to that album all the way through, but I think it's a fair bet that it's like this song, Friends of P and others:  an early Weezer feeling of shoegazing and clumsy, endearing love.

With how Please... starts out, it's doubtful that there's actually any more hope that there's really going to be the person knocking on the door that they wish for.  As I have been typing, it seems like these songs could be sides of the same coin.  Both aren't escaping anything, not a whole lot seems to have value, and there's a fair amount of obsession and jumping to conclusions.

I'm going to go with the Rentals.

"Because you are my fave and I love you."
